Abstract

The objectives of this study are to find out the intrinsic elements in the novels The Fellowship of Ring and The Philosopher’s Stone, intertextual relation principles and the expansion of the story in the novel The Philosopher’s Stone. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The data were collected through the sentences, paragraphs and utterances in both novels and were analyzed using the intertextual theory by Kristeva. The intrinsic elements found in both novels are theme, plot, characters, characterizations, settings and symbol. Both novels have similarities and differences in intrinsic elements. The similarities found are in both novels on the theme of the story, plot sections, characters and characterizations. The differences found are on the settings and the ending of the story. The intertextual relationship principles between the novels are found. They are the absorption of work and mosaic of excerpt. There is also an expansion of the story in the novel The Philosopher’s Stone. The story in the novel The Philosopher’s Stone is found to have been expanded in terms of characters, plot and settings.
