Abstract

Songs can be used to express ideas or emotions, or even as a way for people to communicate with each other. One of the slang words is a type of language that is informal and often used in verbal conversation but avoided in writing or formal speech. This research analyzes the types and functions of slang words used in Ariana Grande's "Positions" album, which the researcher then analyzes based on the functions and types of slang words. In this study, the researcher used the descriptive-qualitative method. The hypothesis of types and functions of slang words from Elisa Mattiello (2008) was used by the researcher. 14 songs from Ariana Grande's "Positions" album became the data source used in this study. Ariana Grande's "Positions" album contains 6 from 15 types of slang words, while based on the functions of slang words, there are 9 from 10 examined in this study. Based on the types of slang words, there are (24 Blending), (28 Variation), (43 Clipping), (3 Acronyms and initialization), (21 Conversion), and (4 Compounding) Based on the findings Researcher found Clipping to be the most dominant used. Based on the functions of slang words, there are (3 Secrecy and privacy), (4 Time restriction, ephemerality, and localism), (23 Informality and debasement), (7 Vulgarity and obscenity), (5 Impertinence, offensiveness, and aggressiveness), (1 Colour and musicality), (3 Playfulness and humor), (74 Freshness and Novelty), and (3 Desire to impress and faddishness) Based on the findings Researcher found Freshness and Novelty the most dominant.
