Abstract

The objectives of this study are to find out the Hamka's Horizon of Expectation from intrinsic or Aesthetic and extrinsic or non-Aesthetic factors. Intrinsic factors used to analyze the Intertextual relation principles and extrinsic factors as Hamka's background as a reader of Magdalena novel and writer of Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck. The method used in this study was a descriptive method. The data were collected through the sentences, paragraphs and utterances in the novel and books were analyzed using the Horizon of Expectation theory by Jauss with Intertextual approach. From the intrinsic elements, similarities found are in both novels on the theme of the story, plot sections, characters and characterizations. The Intertextual relationship principles between the novels are found in the absorption of work and mosaic of excerpts. Hamka’s horizons of expectation are found in the form of theme, plot and setting. The theme related to Hamka's background as a native Minangkabau that had lived in Makassar, in the form of plot related to Hamka's background and knowledge about Minangkabau and Makassar tradition, religion and history of Indonesia, his background as a writer and his knowledge about the Van Der Wijck ship. Horizon of expectation of Hamka in the setting form related to his background that had lived in Padang Panjang, Makassar and Java.
