Abstract

This thesis investigates the lexical relations present in the lyrics of Billie Eilish’s album “Happier Than Ever”. Utilizing Saeed’s theory of lexical relations, the study aims to explore the various forms of meaning relations, such as synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, hyponymy, meronymy, and member collection, embedded in the song lyrics. The research employs a descriptive analysis approach, where the lyrics of all 16 songs from the album are analyzed to identify and categorize instances of lexical relations. The study identified and analyzed the various lexical relations employed in Happier Than Ever, demonstrating how these linguistic elements are integral to the thematic and emotional richness of the album. The researcher found that there were, 16 polysemy, 13 antonymy, 12 snynonymy, 5 hyponymy, 2 meronymy, 1 member collection. The dominance of polysemy, in particular, underscores the multifaceted nature of Eilish's lyrics, which resonate with a wide audience due to their complexity and relatability. Through this analysis, the study reveals how Eilish's lyrical choices reflect complex emotional narratives and themes of mental health, personal struggle, and societal pressure. The findings demonstrate that the strategic use of lexical relations enhances the thematic depth and emotional resonance of the album, contributing to its artistic impact. This research provides insights into how lexical semantics could be utilized in music lyrics to convey nuanced meanings, thus enriching the field of linguistic studies in contemporary music.
