Abstract
This research analyzes the use of slang words in the animated film Inside Out 2. The study aims to identify the types of slang words, examine their functions, and explain how these functions are realized in the characters’ dialogues. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through observation, transcription, and documentation of dialogues between Riley and her friends. Allan and Burridge’s (2006) theory of slang was applied to classify the types and functions. The findings revealed 34 instances of slang words consisting of four types: flippant, clipping, imitative, and fresh and creative. Clipping emerged as the most dominant type, indicating teenagers’ tendency to use shortened and simplified forms in casual speech. In terms of functions, slang words served four purposes: social identity formation, strengthening solidarity, contextual adaptation, and cultural and emotional expression. Cultural and emotional expression appeared most frequently, reflecting the characters’ reliance on slang to convey feelings, attitudes, and humor. In conclusion, the use of slang in Inside Out 2 portrays authentic teenage communication and highlights the sociolinguistic role of slang in expressing identity, building relationships, and enhancing narrative realism. This study contributes to the understanding of slang as a dynamic language phenomenon and provides insights for students, educators, and future researchers interested in sociolinguistics and media studies.
