Abstract
Novel is a form of idea and creativity of an author. In writing novels, an author is able to applied any technique to add aesthetic values on their literary work. One of the technique used is defamiliarization. This study is analyzing the defamiliarization of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. It aimed to identify purpose and usage of defamiliarization at the level of language and narrative structure in the novel by applying Guy Cook and Rice ideas of defamiliarization. In conducting the analysis, the researcher used qualitative method with descriptive approach because the data were collected by reading the novel, finding the sentences that suits to the problem, and also interpreting and understanding the object. Furthermore, the result of the study on defamiliarization in the novel showed challenging and restoring perceptions as two purposes of its usage in the narrative through the existence of literary devices such as metaphor, simile, hyperbole, irony, and parallelism are used at the level of language. While in narrative structure, the novel used flashback, foreshadowing, digression, and stream of consciousness.
