Abstract

Figurative language serves as a language tool designed to convey authors’ message to the readers. It can be used as an enhancement on the creativity and uniqueness of message. The research has a purpose of analysing the metaphors and similes in The Hobbit, improving the understanding of figurative language in literary works. By using descriptive qualitative from Bogdan and Taylor (in Abdussamad, 2021), this research gets data through direct reading on the novel, The Hobbit. The first step involves with collecting the corpus of metaphors and similes, then classify them into 5 types of metaphors and 2 types of similes. After finishing these steps, the next is analysing these corpuses by using stylistic approach. The last is to understand the meaning of those corpuses with its metaphors or similes figuratively. By referring to the discussion, it can be concluded that there are 18 metaphors and 16 similes as analysis materials. For metaphors, there are 10 concretive metaphors, 3 animistic metaphors, 3 humanizing metaphors, 1 synesthetic metaphor and 1 structural metaphor. For similes, there are 15 explicit similes and 1 implicit simile. Furthermore, these metaphors and similes can’t be understood by direct translation. It can be understood by understanding the metaphors and similes itself.
