Abstract

With the upcoming 2024 Indonesian presidential election, a new trend among social media users has surfaced: the inventiveness of meme creation. Due to their quick distribution and social media discussion, these memes which can be word or image address topics and events in an emotive manner and become extensively discussed. The purpose of this study is to define signifiers and signifieds in memes pertaining to Indonesia's presidential and vice-presidential candidates for 2024, clarify the meanings embedded in these memes, and investigate the relationship between social media memes and the portrayal of popular perceptions. This research uses a case study design together with a qualitative methodology. These memes contain markers that are clips from movies and cartoons. The references in the memes correspond with the actual content of the Indonesian presidential candidates debates in 2024. These memes disseminate information and perceptions about the conduct, dispositions, and results of the Indonesian presidential candidates for 2024. The findings show that the 2024 presidential contenders' memes reflect public perceptions, which include expressions, opinions, critiques, humour, and satire. Moreover, every meme identifies signifiers and signifieds.
